A Front Desk Clerks point of view I am going to write this article on the opposite end of the spectrum from the other writers in this category. As a front desk clerk at a hotel, I have some horror stories of my own. I get lonely business men stopping by, I get the rowdy construction workers, I get the hoity-toity, I get the prostitutes, the drug dealers, the drug addicts, and occasionally the nice older couple.
I work at a budget hotel, we are nice, but still affordable for the average
person. Therefore a lot of businesses use our hotel for their lodging needs. I
know being on the road gets lonely sometimes, but I promise, no matter how
many times you proposition that desk clerk, she is not going to come to your
room and do that thing, you keep telling her you can do. No matter how many
times you ask, we are not going to give you a discount because you only need
the room for an hour. We don't want to smell your weed seeping under the door.
We do need you to keep it down, because you are not the only group or person
in the hotel, and it is a place to SLEEP.
We know that the Hilton is a grand hotel, we would love to be able to offer
you the same thing, however you got this room for $60 a night, we can't give
you luxury for $60 a night. We do not offer room service, even if you call and
demand us to bring our free continental breakfast to your room, and would you
want us to? You never make people that are around your food angry.
I know that there is a certain standard that everyone should uphold, and I
know that we are only human. That clogged toilet that you are complaining
about is the first that we have heard of it, if we had known it was clogged,
we would have already unclogged it. The remote doesn't have batteries, the
person before you took them, I promise, they take anything not bolted down. We
replace alarm clocks on a daily basis, pillows, blankets, even telephones.
Don't take me wrong, I love my job, I love what I do. I am just fed up with
ugly, fat, old men trying to get me into their room. I am tired of the people
that think I will take being yelled at and treated like a dog, because I am
not built that way. When someone gets in my face, I get back in theirs. Don't
get me wrong, I don't mind going to unclog the toilet, I don't mind fixing
your t.v., getting you a new remote, more towels, that's what I am there for.
Just think about how many rooms are in the hotel you stay at next. There is
probably someone in most of those rooms, and there is usually only one desk
clerk on duty at any given time. Think about how many people they are trying
to keep happy, and exactly what they have to put up with. Please above
everything else, don't take your hard day of traveling out on that poor desk
clerk, trust me, I have been there, and it stinks.
